Grading Syllabus

Judo Grading Syllabus

Gradings are where the children have a chance to progress in rank and belt colour, demonstrating an increase in skill and knowledge. We will be grading the children through the “British Judo Association”, the National Governing Body for Judo in Great Britain. This gives the children a transferable grade with the authority of an internationally recognised organisation, aligned with a nationally recognised standard, approved by Sport England. This also gives them the chance to start competing should they wish to. Junior grades for are either called a “Mon” or “Sho” depending on the child’s age.

Children AGED 5-7 years / school years 1-3

Sho grades are based initially on movement, gymnastics and basic skills but at higher levels there is a degree of crossover with the mon scheme. This means that when they enter year 4/turn 8 we can commute the grade across to the equivalent Mon grade. Sho grades are free.

Students AGED 8+ / school years 4+

Mon, means “gate” in Japanese, and there are three per belt. The belts are in the order, from lowest to highest, white, red, yellow, orange, green, blue and brown. Black belt can only be attained from the age of 15 and only as a senior. I typically grade the children twice per year in the Mon scheme and they would normally be expected to go up one Mon at a time. Occasionally they may go up more than this, though this is usually when they are over 12 years old. Mon gradings cost £6.00.
